Gender equality in language teaching for migrants

Abstract

How does gender influence migration issues: can we imagine the experience of being a woman, transgender or cisgender, a foreigner, undocumented, poor, without family ties and knowledge of the culture or language around us? In a world where the challenge of gender equality is even more urgent and necessary in the face of the statistics of horror and barbarism, professionals and volunteers must consider the processes of teaching national languages to migrants as an opportunity, as UNESCO proposes, to emancipate and empower those who suffer discrimination, and to raise awareness and sensitise those who discriminate, through education. Starting from the principles that underpin the culture of peace, which are framed around universal rights, and linking them to feminism so that the contents of the teaching and learning processes are confronted with gender violence and discrimination, initiating and training migrants on the foundations of the movements for equality. The aim is to raise awareness and intervene against gender-based violence by promoting an education based on the use of inclusive language and to deepen, from the visibility of people who suffer discrimination, from their voices and experiences, towards reflections that allow them to become aware of the threats and dangers that lurk in the new context, and, from access to education, to become empowered, to know and be able to participate in resistance movements for equality.
