The Community Tool Box comprises 27 sections and illustrative examples of activities that may assist readers in developing a deeper comprehension of other cultures and in formulating objectives for fostering relationships with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds.

The Integrating Cities toolkits offer practical, tested guidance and inspiration to help cities to reach European standards in key areas of migrant integration –as set out in the EUROCITIES Integrating Cities Charter. Three Integrating Cities toolkits were developed in 2012 through the work of the transnational project Making Integration Work in Europe’s Cities (MIXITIES), funded by the European Integration Fund. They covered: Introductory and language courses; Anti-discrimination policies; and promoting cultural diversity. Through the work of the new Integrating Cities project ImpleMentoring “City to City support for migrant integration”, four new toolkits were developed in 2014 and cover the themes of: Enhancing public perception on migration and diversity; Managing diversity and promoting equality in cities’ administration and service provision; Making participation effective in diverse neighbourhoods and engagement of migrant communities in local policy-making processes and political participation. The toolkits are designed primarily for people working in local authorities in Europe’s larger cities. But they may also be useful for smaller local administrations in Europe and beyond, and for the partners of local authorities such as NGOs. The OECD’s survey of Adult Skills (PIAAC) has shed light on 20% of adults in Europe who lack key competences in literacy, numeracy, and ICT, which is problematic because low skills and qualifications are closely related to social and economic exclusion. At the same time, the migrant population in Europe has been increasing since 2015 and a part of those newly arrived migrants are low-skilled or their qualifications are not being recognized in the new country. Migrants, compared to natives, have higher unemployment rates and this gap only increases when being low-skilled. There is just a need for new possibilities to increase skills and employability, but also in new ways to recognize skills and competences acquired through non-formal learning. According to the European Parliament, Key Competences for empowerment, social inclusion and employability include the ability to communicate in the mother tongue, in a foreign language, cultural awareness and expression, and digital competences. TANDEM aims to improve migrants’ key competences and employability, enabling them to capitalize on their linguistic abilities through an innovative learning opportunity based on non-formal methodologies, and promoting cultural exchange and peer-learning between migrants and local adults. TANDEM shall hence develop an innovative upskilling pathway based on the Task-Based Language Teaching methodology, providing migrants with a set of tools enabling them to teach their languages, and by doing so, increase the competences of both them and local adults.

The Trainers’ Kit is designed for educators to improve their intercultural skills for delivering efficient language training to adult migrants. The tool provides principles and practice of interculturalism in language education and guidelines for work in a multicultural environment.

In this sense, a learning course curriculum targeting Integration Services Professionals and Volunteers with a step-by-step process to systematically promote newly arrived migrants’ integration through the Buddy System is needed. The partnership of M4M project, provides an answer to migrants’ needs towards a better inclusion in the host country, to make sure newly arrived migrants do not feel alone and have a person who they can rely on to explain, guide, support and help them throughout the inclusion process. Therefore, the partnership of M4M project designed a course curriculum to improve the welcoming process and reinforce the exercise of rights of migrants: The Buddy System – Mentoring Training.
